INTELLIGENT GREEN BUILDINGS
Sense, Analyze, Interpret, and Decide (SAID)
The purpose of the SAID project—funded through the New York State Office of Science, Technology, and Academic Research (NYSTAR)—is to develop significant improvements in systems that control energy use and environmental quality in buildings, and enable New York-based companies to benefit from subsequent commercialization.
This project presents prime opportunities to address multiple needs and priorities of New York state and the US, including improving human health, economic prosperity, energy independence, and homeland security.
SAID OBJECTIVES
The primary focus of the SAID project is the continued development of systems that integrate abilities to “Sense, Analyze, Interpret, and Decide” for intelligent buildings.
Envisioned applications of SAID technologies in intelligent buildings include the ability to monitor and control energy use and environmental quality at much smaller spatial and temporal scales than is currently possible with conventional systems.
Today’s heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems typically are “one-size-fits-all” designs, which can leave up to 30% of occupants dissatisfied with thermal comfort. Current HVAC technologies also contribute to deficiencies in indoor environmental quality (IEQ), which cause losses in productivity that have been estimated to be as high as $250 billion in the US.
Next-generation integrated systems using SAID technologies will monitor and control conditions across a cascade of spatial scales ranging from individuals’ desktops to office suites to floors to whole buildings, and even communicating among interconnected buildings.
